Foundations summer programs abroad for middle school students combine elements of the high school summer programs abroad we have offered to older students for six decades. It incorporates the larger-group dynamism and variety of our Excel Pre-College Enrichment programs with the smaller-group togetherness, adventure, and active fun of Cultural Exploration summer programs. Students benefit from the immersion setting of our summer language immersion programs and the meaningful interaction with local communities that occurs in our summer Community Service programs abroad. Foundations summer programs for middle school students are designed for adventurous, energetic, and engaged sixth, seventh, and eighth graders looking for alternatives to more traditional camp settings. Our experienced leaders stress the importance of a supportive group dynamic, facilitate positive interactions with local people, and create plentiful opportunities for exploration and discovery. A low student-to-leader ratio insures that students receive the personal attention they need in the context of a three week program that is structured, safe, and fun. With this program as a foundation, students often move on to other Putney experiences in future years.
“Putney has a seamless organization, tons of experience, communicates well with parents, has people who answer the phone and know immediately what to do and can answer questions. The leaders were great and the kids had an unbelievable breadth and depth of experience. I can’t say enough great things about it! Thank you so much.”

Our Foundations Costa Rica program is open to students completing 6th-8th grades. Using a beachside Costa Rican village as a base, students join in a variety of activities including Spanish language learning, community service, environmental studies, and active outdoor fun. Enrichment seminars range from Spanish music lessons to pottery workshops with local artisans; Costa Rican cooking classes to surfing. All activities are designed to get students out interacting with Costa Ricans and learning through hands-on experience.
Our new Foundations Spain program is open to students completing 7th and 8th grades. Based in the friendly Andalucian city of Granada, students explore the enchanting region of Southern Spain through adventurous activities and structured cultural engagement. Marvel at the intricate majesty of La Alhambra, learn to dance flamenco in a traditional cueva, or take a surf lesson on the Costa del Sol. This program combines outdoor adventure with an introduction to authentic cultural immersion.
