Alex Ossola

  • Education: Hamilton College, B.A., Comparative Literature with honors, minor in Geosciences.

Alex’s longtime interest in Latin America became a passion after her college semester abroad in Lima. She had the opportunity to visit many of the different climes presented by Peru’s highly diverse environment, from the jungle to the sierra, and back to the coastal desert. While in Lima she volunteered with a NGO called Flora Tristán, which focused on women’s issues and helped some of Lima’s neediest people receive free legal counsel. She was deeply affected by the experience; and the immediacy of so many poignant social justice issues inspired her to focus on domestic social justice and join City Year in Washington, D.C. after graduating from college. She spent the 2010-2011 school year serving as a tutor, mentor, and role model for elementary school students in Southeast DC and feels that, during the experience, she learned even more than she taught. She hopes to make her career in science journalism but will surely make stops in new vocations along the way. Alex enjoys rock and alternative music, classical literature, and she plays the flute and guitar.  She is fluent in Spanish. Alex has led Community Service Peru.
