Eli Evans is a writer and a PhD candidate in the Comparative Literature Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he also teaches for the Writing Program. In his academic work, he focuses on twentieth century and contemporary Spanish literature. His dissertation is provisionally titled “Hope and Exile: Altermodernities in Twentieth Century Spanish Literary Culture.” In his non-academic work, he writes about just about anything he can come up with. Essays, fiction, and interviews have been widely and internationally published in magazines and online venues such as n+1, truthout, Zg Press, Quimera, Glimmer Train, and many others, and he has given readings of his work at Book Soup in Los Angeles and BookCourt in Brooklyn. This will be his eleventh summer with Putney Student Travel. He spent nine extremely excellent summers with Excel Madrid/Barcelona, including the final two as director, and two with Excel at Amherst College.
