Technology such as cell phones, tablets, laptops, and smart watches make our lives easier and more connected, but can also lead to distraction and isolation. We at Putney Student Travel have drawn upon the collected wisdom, feedback, and insight of alumni students, parents, leaders, and experts to craft a policy we believe maximizes the benefits of technology, while minimizing its drawbacks. Experience and a growing body of research has taught us that these devices can have adverse effects on students’ social, emotional, and mental well being, preventing the kind of life-changing growth that can only come about when students are present, engaged, and free from distractions. For these reasons, our middle school programs are 100% tech-free. Our high school programs (with the exception of campus-based programs like Pre-College and Oxford Academia) are tech-free for a period equal to half the program, and no shorter than seven days.
Our program leaders are trained in implementing the tech-free period, from locking phones to framing expectations, and discussing student concerns that may arise. The tech-free time allows students to connect, collaborate, and explore together, strengthening bonds between fellow participants and our host communities.
We find that once the tech-free period has ended, many students have reevaluated their relationship with technology. At the end of this period, leaders facilitate a discussion with the group on how they wish to proceed and what guidelines they wish to establish as a group for technology use during the remainder of the program.
In addition to the complicated feelings students may have about forgoing access to their technology, we recognize this may be a challenge for some parents as well. Using our program blogs, 24-hour summer emergency line, and regularly scheduled check-in periods, we hope to alleviate some of these concerns. If you have additional questions or concerns, please refer to our FAQ Document, or reach out to us by phone at 802-387-5000.
