Summer High School Photography Programs

Our high school summer photography programs get students out into the field in some of the world’s most awe-inspiring settings, from Yellowstone to Tokyo. Students can develop their skills in the company of peers, with the guidance and mentorship of accomplished program leaders. These summer travel programs, both domestic and abroad, are designed for young student photographers of all skill levels, whether just beginning to explore this field or seeking to chart a course into a photography career.

Traveling & Field-Based Photography Itineraries for High School Students

Beyond conventional summer classes, each of our photography-focused travel programs takes high school students to a stunning environment, where they can immerse themselves not only in remarkable landscapes and ecosystems, but also in local culture. From the deserts of Namibia to the summer tundra of the Canadian Arctic, students spend the majority of each day in the field, working with their peers and trip leaders on honing specific skills. In the evenings, the group discusses the day, workshops images, and learns about the local environment, conservation issues, topics in photography, and more.

Wildlife, Conservation, & Landscape Photography Student Focuses

The settings of our summer photography travel programs for high school students lend themselves to helping participants gain experience in wildlife photography and landscape photography, but regardless of the program, each student traveler will learn technical skills that are applicable to all types of photography, from documentary and portraiture to fashion and sports photography. This summer you could find yourself photographing cheetahs and hyenas in Namibia, tracking polar bears with guides in the Canadian Arctic, or capturing the vibrant colors of La Boqueria in Barcelona. On several of our photo programs, high school students choose either the Photography Workshop or Conservation Workshop—on these trips, students in the Photography Workshop can expect to engage with conservation issues that can inform and inspire their own photo work.

Summer High School Photography Trip Leaders & Experts

Our high school photography travel program leaders are accomplished young professionals in their field, dedicated to and passionate about sharing their experience, skills, and insights with Putney students. They work as educators, award-winning independent photographers, photojournalists, marketers, and nonprofit entrepreneurs. Our photo leaders have published their work in leading publications, ranging from The New York Times and The Boston Herald to National Geographic, Vogue, and Vice. A mid-career photography expert joins us for part of the itinerary in several of our summer photography programs, sharing even more specialized expertise with students.

City-Based Photography Programs

High school students interested in pursuing photography might also choose a city-based photography program, capturing vibrant neighborhoods and the multicultural fabric of a place. Each of our Pre-College programs—in Barcelona, Tokyo, and Tuscany—offers a Photography seminar taught by talented and inspiring instructors.
