An Outward Bound alum, Avery graduated college and went on to blend education with outdoor adventure. After leading biking and backpacking trips throughout the Green and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, she earned her master’s in English education, hoping to blend literature and environmental studies in her work. With eight years of experience teaching English and climate change studies, she has focused the bulk of her experiential learning work on sustainable tourism and local environmental activism. Avery spearheaded an environmental literature course at three Philadelphia area schools and recently collaborated with Philly teachers to design a publicly available climate change curriculum in partnership with the University of Pennsylvania. She has led language, service, and career programs in the United States, Bonaire, Costa Rica, Spain, and Argentina. She now works full-time for the Putney Barn’s hiring team. In her free time, Avery tries to maintain her French and Spanish skills, compete in triathlons, paint silly things, and negotiate for couch space with her dogs.
