While studying education at Bethel University, Michelle focused on facilitating educational experiences for vulnerable populations of youth. She participated in the Carroll County Special Olympics and received training in mental health, first aid, and disaster planning for children. As a Division I varsity soccer athlete, Michelle spent a significant amount of time traveling throughout the United States. After graduation, Michelle ran science and technology workshops for schools in Indigenous communities in Canada through an educational outreach organization called Elephant Thoughts. She has traveled to First Nations communities in Northern and Southern Ontario, New Brunswick, and in Canada’s remote subarctic regions. She has also spent time in Greece while completing her M.S. in Olympic Management at the International Olympic Academy this past summer. Currently, Michelle is completing her master’s thesis while teaching in the Cree First Nations community of Chisasibi, in Northern Quebec. Beyond academics, Michelle coaches youth sports, enjoys painting and snowshoeing, and is learning French. This fall, Michelle plans to explore Northern Europe, following her trip to France for the Paralympic Games.
