Nathan Grutchfield
While an undergrad at UVM, Nathan immersed himself in Spanish language and developed a love of Spanish-speaking cultures, and the cultures of our globe in general. He minored in environmental studies and took part in an environmental stewardship-oriented internship to the El Yunque rainforest of Puerto Rico in 2021, learning the Spanish language while exploring the effects of Hurricane María on the rainforest’s ecology and the ways in which citizens of Puerto Rico’s larger cities create community gardens that emulate natural processes. Nathan’s interest in Spanish and other Iberian languages has been an important theme of his life in recent years. In addition to spending a full year attending a Catalan university in the Spanish Language Department, Nathan has also enrolled in Spanish language schools in Santiago de Compostela, Spain; Valencia, Spain; and Oaxaca, Mexico, through which he has been fortunate to stay with host families who have made him realize that sometimes it is the everyday life of other countries that makes the biggest impression on you. Nathan currently works as a Middle School Spanish Teacher in Burlington, Vermont. In addition to being fluent in Spanish, Nathan has been learning German for a year and a half and has just started learning Portuguese.
