Spend the second half of the program in coastal Valencia for a week of continued language instruction paired with local excursions, vibrant food culture, and life in a dynamic Mediterranean city.. Through structured lessons, time spent with Spanish peers, and interactive cultural activities, return home with improved Spanish proficiency and a deeper understanding of Spanish culture.

Meet your fellow high school student travelers and one or more of your program leaders in New York, and fly together to Barcelona, Spain. To learn more about how we organize travel, click here.
Touch down in the second-largest city in Spain and a true international cultural hub. After an orientation to the program, visit the cobblestoned Gothic Quarters and Gaudí’s towering masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia Basílica.
Travel by private bus to the village of Espot, in the foothills of the Pyrenees at the entrance to Aigüestortes National Park. Stay together in an off-season ski hotel with its own pool, sports fields, classrooms, rec rooms, and restaurant. Take daily Spanish classes with native Spanish speakers, focusing on real-word usage and vocabulary. While here, your group shares the hotel with Spanish high school students from Valencia who partner with the group to complement classroom time with personal connections and active language use. After saying farewell to your new Spanish friends, head south to the Mediterranean Coast and vibrant city of Valencia. Stay in private group accommodations and continue daily morning language lessons. In the afternoons, explore the city together with your program leaders; spend time learning to cook Paella Valenciana, make your own authentic Valencian espadrilles, or relax on one of the city’s many Blue Flag beaches. Visit the Oceanogràfic, Europe’s largest aquarium, as well as the architecturally stunning City of Arts and Sciences.

The Spanish Pyrenees rise majestically from the rolling green foothills of Northwest Spain. Both a working pastoral idyll and an internationally acclaimed destination for outdoor activities enthusiasts, the small mountainside hamlets and larger valley villages preserve a rich rural tapestry. Valencia, the third largest city in Spain, is an often overlooked Mediterranean wonder, boasting world-class cuisine, architecture, and entrepreneurial innovation. With a diverse population of over 1.6 million, Barcelona is markedly cosmopolitan, wearing its reputation for being Spain’s “Gateway to Europe” as a badge of considerable honor.
Castellano, or Castilian Spanish, is the official language of Spain, although other languages are spoken in different regions, including Catalan in Cataluña. In Valencia, a Catalan dialect called valenciano is spoken in addition to castellano.
Daytime temperatures in Barcelona and Valencia during the summer months range from 80–90ºF/27–35ºC. It is much cooler in the mountains, where temperatures hover around 65-70ºF/21ºC in the afternoon, and can sometimes dip below 50ºF at night.
Each region of Spain is famous for its own specialty, a product of the area’s climate, history, and customs. Northern Spanish cuisine is a hearty reflection of the farming industry and proximity to the Atlantic coast, with specialties like queso manchego and tortilla de patata. Valencia is the birthplace of paella and showcases a wide variety of seafood and other Mediterranean dishes.

The goals of this language program are to improve your fluency in Spanish by building your vocabulary and confidence in speaking, while exploring Spain’s culture through daily structured lessons, a variety of outdoor activities and cultural workshops, and interactions with locals. Each day, dedicated native language instructors and your leaders hold dynamic conversational language lessons designed to help you let go of your inhibitions and communicate more easily. Language lessons are fun and interactive, and incorporate active, hands-on elements such as scavenger hunts, games, and informal interviews.
Two years of language study are required for this program. Each student signs a language pledge to speak only Spanish during the program, not only with the many local people you meet, but also with your leaders and within your group. To learn more about our Language programs click here.
To encourage full engagement and immersion in the Putney travel experience, we limit the use of cell phones and other devices on our High School programs. Students are allowed to use their phones in transit to the program, and keep their devices throughout. During in-country orientation, leaders will lock phones with a code, unlocking them for the second half of the program. During the tech-free portion of the program, students have the opportunity for a weekly call home according to a pre-arranged schedule. For more details, please see our FAQ.
This is a physically active summer travel program. There are options to hike, swim, bike, and surf. You will also do a lot of walking in both the Pyrenees and Valencia. You do not need to be at peak fitness to participate, but it is important that you have a desire to be physically active, and that you are excited about trying all activities.
In Barcelona, we stay at a comfortable hotel with easy access to the city center. While in the Pyrenees we stay in an off-season ski hotel, with 4–6 students per room and private en-suite bathrooms. In Valencia, we stay in a spacious private group house with a pool and shared rooms.
While in the Pyrenees, we will have all meals at the hotel restaurant, with occasional picnics on the go during outdoor activities. In Valencia we will have breakfast and lunch at our group accommodations, prepared by a private cook, and dinner out at restaurants or markets in the city center. In Barcelona we will eat out at restaurants. Lunches tend to be the biggest meal of the day in Spain, followed by a siesta. Restaurants range from traditional regional cuisine to a more international selection in Valencia and Barcelona.
