Gregg Verutes
Gregg completed his doctoral studies in Spain, where he developed a management tool to assess the risk of bycatch—the unintended capture of non-target species—in data-limited fisheries. He currently consults for the European Commission, advising on protected, endangered, and threatened species. Gregg frequently returns to southern Portugal to reunite with his Ph.D. field team and survey cetaceans (dolphins, porpoises, and whales) off the Algarve coast. Gregg is the Director of Conservation Science at Blue Forest, where he leads a team dedicated to combining science, finance, and innovation to restore forest and watershed health in the face of climate change. In his spare time, Gregg plays tennis, skis, backpacks, and plays bass guitar (not all at once—at least, not yet!). This summer, he is restoring a Civil War-era farmhouse and five acres of wetlands in upstate New York, together with friends.
