Why Putney Programs Are Tech-Free
Technology such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and smartwatches makes our lives easier and more connected, but can also lead to distraction and isolation. A growing body of research, our own experience, and extensive feedback from families has taught us that these devices can have adverse effects on students’ social, emotional, and mental well-being, preventing the kind of life-changing growth that can only come about when students are present, engaged, and free from distractions. For these reasons, and in support of our program goals and student outcomes, Putney’s middle school and high school travel programs are tech-free for the entirety of the program.
For more than 75 years, Putney programs have been designed to foster active participation and engagement: exploring new places, engaging with local communities, learning about global issues, taking on challenges, pursuing interests, and forming close friendships in a small group. This intentional program design is what sets the Putney experience and educational travel programs apart. Personal devices make it more difficult to fully enter that experience, and so our tech-free policy, as one piece of our overall approach to program design, supports the benefits and student outcomes that make our programs so impactful year after year.
What Does Tech-Free Mean on Putney Programs?
For Putney, tech-free means no phones or internet-connected devices during the program. Students can bring their smartphones with them to ensure smooth travel days to and from the program, and contact home once the group has arrived. Leaders then collect and safely store phones until departure day.
Other technology, such as laptops, smartwatches, tablets, and similar devices, can also prevent students from engaging fully. We expect all students to honor and abide by the philosophy of the tech fast and refrain from using other connected devices to replace their smartphone during this period.
How Our Tech-Free Programs Work
Once the group arrives at their destination, students have an opportunity to text or call home. Program leaders then collect and safely store all phones for the duration of the program. Over the course of the program, students have an opportunity to contact home, if they wish, at pre-established times and intervals that are communicated to parents and families.
