While at Western Washington University, Marissa focused on learning the Spanish language and exploring Spanish culture in Granada, Spain. After studying abroad, she earned her certification to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) in Arequipa, Peru, where she taught for six months, instructing teens and adults at a local language institute. Marissa has spent a total of three years living in South America—two years in Colombia and one in Peru. During this time, she developed a deep love for Latin American cultures and traveled to nine different countries in the region. Her experience fully immersing herself in South American life has provided her with immense cultural knowledge and strong Spanish linguistic skills, which empower her to lead culturally focused programs. During the school year, Marissa teaches Spanish to K-2nd grade students at an international school in Monterey, California. In her free time, she enjoys spending time outdoors— whether kayaking, running or hiking—and has set a goal of participating in at least 3 races this year. She often uses running as a means of experiencing new countries, whether through the countryside or in the mountains.
