As an undergraduate, Tim competed in both D1 and D3 cross country and track and field, was a member of various music groups, and spent a lot of time rock climbing. Since then, he has worked as a ski instructor in Colorado; toured with a bluegrass band; thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail; served a year in AmeriCorps; worked for Habitat for Humanity; worked as a raft guide; worked as a surf therapist in Hawaii; and served as an EMT and master field instructor for several wilderness therapy programs. For six years, he taught and managed educators at the five campuses of NatureBridge, a nonprofit educational partner of the national parks. His master’s thesis focused on implementing wilderness therapy practices into traditional science education, which he brought to urban schools where he taught and coached in Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan. He currently lives in San Francisco, where he teaches middle school science, coaches, and guides in the Sierras in the summers. He has led National Geographic student programs to Hawaii and Iceland; Putney programs to Costa Rica, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji; as well as other programs to Argentina, Canada, Mexico, Turkey, Morocco, Scotland, and Nepal.
