While at Pomona College, Frances studied English literature and politics, finding a love for mid-century avant-garde poetry and art of the Black Mountain College era. As president of the Claremont College’s outdoors club, Frances dedicated much of her college career to increasing access to the outdoors by working with a member base of 1,000+ students and 60+ leaders to offer expenses-paid trips involving hiking, backpacking, climbing, surfing, and camping. Frances spent a semester studying in Granada, Spain, where her classes in comparative religious studies, art history, architecture, international relations, and Spanish culture took her to numerous historical sites such as La Madraza, the Alhambra, and Córdoba’s Mosque-Cathedral. Among travels to Morocco, Italy, France, and Ireland, she most enjoyed the two weeks she spent volunteering on a family-owned farm in Catalonia. Frances returned to Claremont determined to make international study and travel a key component of her career, beginning as a student advisor for Pomona’s International & Domestic Programs Office, where she built a correspondence program for selected students to share their experiences abroad through creative processes. Frances is proficient in Latin and Spanish, and this fall, she is delighted to return to Spain (this time in Madrid) to teach English to local middle school students.
