Glaciers, Horses, & the Westfjords: Notes from Iceland

This summer’s leaders on our Exploration program in Iceland share highlights from several unforgettable days of glacier hiking, Icelandic farm life, and a journey into the country’s spectacular Westfjords.

The past three days have been full of adventure, new experiences, and some of the most spectacular scenery Iceland has to offer. As our journey continues, it’s been wonderful to watch the students embrace each challenge with enthusiasm. We’re lucky to have such a positive group!

June 28: Hiking Snæfellsjökull Glacier

Our day began with one of the most physically demanding adventures of the program: a guided glacier hike on Snæfellsjökull.

Bundled up against the cold, students stepped onto the glacier in thick fog, where visibility was limited and the landscape felt almost otherworldly. Despite the chilly temperatures and challenging terrain, everyone persevered, encouraging one another every step of the way.

As we made our return journey, the weather rewarded our efforts. The fog gradually lifted, revealing breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the vast glacier we had just crossed. We even got to drink the glacier water! The consensus: quite possibly the most refreshing water we’ve ever tasted. Seeing the landscape open up gave everyone a new appreciation for how far they had traveled and served as a memorable reminder that perseverance often comes with an incredible reward.

June 29: Icelandic Farm Life

After the excitement of the glacier, the following day offered a chance to experience a different side of Iceland.

We spent the morning at a local horse farm, where students saddled up to ride Icelandic horses and take in the scenery. They also enjoyed spending time with the farm’s friendly dogs, who quickly became a highlight for some in our group.

The farm treated us to a wonderful homemade lunch before we headed to a nearby geothermal pool. Soaking in the naturally warm water was the perfect way to relax after several busy days of hiking and exploring. We returned to our hostel that evening to catch the match and absolutely devour dinner.

June 30: Journey to the Westfjords

Today was primarily a travel day as we made our way from the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to our next home base in Breiðavík, located in Iceland’s stunning Westfjords.

Along the way, we stopped to explore one of Iceland’s striking red-sand volcanic landscapes. The vibrant red earth, shaped by ancient volcanic activity, provided a dramatic contrast to the surrounding mountains and coastline. Then, back to the bus.

Although it was a long drive, the route offered jaw-dropping landscapes, winding fjords, and countless scenic views along the way. Before settling in, we stopped to stock up on groceries for the next several days, giving students a chance to help prepare for our very rural surroundings at our new accommodation.

After arriving in Breiðavík, we enjoyed dinner together, settled in, and relaxed by watching the match together—a fun way to unwind after a full day on the road.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow promises another exciting day as we visit a another geothermal bath to recharge before heading to the famous sea cliffs, where we’ll have the opportunity to observe Iceland’s iconic puffins in their natural habitat. We have a handful of avid bird watchers in our group, so the excitement is palpable.
