Dancing in the Andes: Notes from Peru

Service Peru students Lensa and Reina share highlights from a memorable few days in Peru, including working on service projects and participating in a traditional Peruvian dance class.

Yesterday we arose to the beautiful ringing of our leader Elena’s alarm and headed over to breakfast. We enjoyed our delectable breakfast of eggs and got prepared to work. Half of us headed to a peach tree farm while the others remained at the site to make cement for a wall. At the peach tree farm, we were hard at work digging up roots for the trees to flourish. We took a break halfway through to devour some Oreos and apples and then headed back to work. We then reunited with each other to eat lunch and started working on our independent projects. Some people began recording videos, while others researched information and sketched murals. Then we walked over to the local school to take the best dance class of our lives. We watched three different types of traditional Peruvian dancing and then split into groups to learn each type. We put on the traditional clothing and the dancers taught us intricate steps to the music. After learning, we had a dance off and then headed to dinner. After dinner, we played cards, stargazed, and listened to music.

Today, we woke up early to eat breakfast and prepare for the big day of service ahead of us. We got ready for our work, which was to sand metal poles that John will use for building. We each grabbed a pole and sandpaper, and our group worked quickly so we could transition to focusing on our independent projects for the remainder of the week. After sanding away, we ate a satisfying lunch. After lunch, we headed to work on our independent projects, which today consisted of lots of construction with the help of John. Then we walked to the store with local students and enjoyed ice cream and world cup trading cards. After visiting the store, we ate dinner and enjoyed the rest of the night by relaxing and hanging out. We can’t wait to work on our projects tomorrow!
