Discovering the world, one Putney program at a time.
As we celebrate 75 years, we’re spotlighting the voices of students whose summers with Putney have shaped how they see the world. Olivia is one of those students—her first experience was in middle school, and she has since returned for multiple programs.
Olivia first joined Putney the summer between seventh and eighth grade, choosing a program in Hawaii that combined adventure with service. That first experience opened her eyes to new perspectives and introduced her to students from around the globe.
“It really changed how I was thinking about the world at that point.”
She returned this past summer for a program in Switzerland, France, and Holland, traveling with a friend she had encouraged to join her.
“One of the better moments was not while we were out doing stuff, but we came back to the hotel and we were sitting out in the hallway and just talking to each other and eating ice cream. And it was super fun.”
Beyond creating memories, Olivia’s Putney experiences have helped her grow in confidence, learn how to connect quickly with new people, and appreciate how much we share in common—even with those who seem different. A multi-day biking adventure through Amsterdam was a highlight.
“It just really taught me that, like, you’d be surprised what you have in common with people.” she reflects.
Olivia has also found that Putney programs can expand interests and inspire curiosity. From service on a farm to a day focused on marine biology, she discovered new passions and gained exposure to possibilities she hadn’t considered before.
“It showed me there are so many different options in life,” she says. “You could start a farm, study marine biology, or explore a path that’s completely different from what’s expected.”
Reflecting on Putney’s 75-year legacy, Olivia appreciates being part of something larger than herself.
“It’s super cool to be part of something that has affected so many people’s lives,” she says. “All of our hostels knew the instructors, and it was super cool to just get that different side of travel.”
Her advice for students considering Putney:
“Do it. Take that step… Because for me, at least, the rewards have been 100 times worth it.”
