Final Days in Frigiliana: Notes from Spain

Follow the journey of students in our high school Language Spain program through an original poem celebrating the places, people, and moments that made a month in Spain unforgettable.

A final project poem written by Maggie:

Hace un mes salí a viajar,
Con muchas ganas de explorar.
España me abrió el corazón,
Y me llenó de inspiración.

Llanes fue nuestro primer lugar,
Con lluvia, viento y mucho mar.
La comida nos sorprendió,
Y el español nos complicó.

Con la gente nos animamos a hablar,
Aunque nos daba miedo empezar.
Tuvimos aventuras cerca del mar,
Y casi un pez dejó de nadar.

En Potes todo era tranquilidad,
Naturaleza y mucha amistad.
Ben estrenó un nuevo peinado,
Y aprendimos a hacer queso, ¡que asco!

Después Madrid nos recibió,
Y la ciudad nos encantó.
Su comida fue espectacular,
Y las tiendas nos hicieron disfrutar.

En una cocina hicimos tortilla,
Y Toledo fue una maravilla.
El calor nos hizo sudar,
Y los chicos también mirar.

Cuenca fue el lugar más especial,
Por su gente tan excepcional.
Con mi familia pude conectar,
Y amistades difíciles de olvidar.

En Granada nos enfermamos,
pero poco a poco nos recuperamos.
Flamenco aprendimos a bailar,
Y la Alhambra pudimos admirar.

España logró el Mundial,
Que momento tan especial.
Las calles llenas de emoción,
Fue una gran celebración.

La aventura llega a su final,
Fue algo muy especial.
Pero sé que volveré,
Porque aquí siempre sonreiré.

Approximate translation:

A month ago I set off on a jouney,
Eager to explore.

Spain opened my heart,
And filled me with inspiration.

Llanes was our first stop,
With rain, wind, and plenty of sea.

The food surprised us,
And Spanish was a bit of a challenge.

We felt comfortable talking to the locals,
Even though we were afraid to start.

We had adventures near the sea,
And a fish almost stopped swimming (inside joke).

In Potes, everything was peaceful,
Nature and lots of friendship.

Ben debuted a new hairstyle,
And we learned to make cheese—yuck!

Then Madrid welcomed us,
And we loved the city.

Its food was spectacular,
And the shops were a delight.

We made a tortilla in a kitchen,
And Toledo was wonderful.

The heat made us sweat,
And we looked at the boys.

Cuenca was the most special place,
Because of its exceptional people.

I was able to connect with my family,
And make friendships that are hard to forget.

Some got sick in Granada,
but little by little we recovered.

We learned to dance flamenco,
And we were able to admire the Alhambra.

Spain won the World Cup,
What a special moment.

The streets were filled with emotion,
It was a great celebration.

The adventure comes to an end,
It was something very special.

But I know I’ll be back,
Because I’ll always smile here.

________

From the leaders: Our last days in Spain included multiple visits to the popular beach in Nerja, completion and presentation of student personal projects, a visit to a massive cave, more birthday celebrations (Elena and Clio), and a hike to a secret Mediterranean cove and pebble beach. Photos below. What an amazing program! Take care!
