While at Santiago de Compostela, Daniel Couceiro conducted research on the wintering ecology of migratory shorebirds by modeling all the beaches in his native Galicia. He then spent three years in the Peruvian Amazon, where he led a citizen science project monitoring jaguars and harpy eagles and discovered more than 20 new insect species. Following this work, he became a National Geographic Explorer and launched his own conservation initiative in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia: a bird club that trained high school students in ecotourism, birdwatching, photography, and muralism. Currently, Daniel leads field trips for environmental science college students, focusing on biodiversity conservation in countries such as New Zealand, Belize, and Bulgaria. He also writes articles on nature and travel. Daniel is fluent in Spanish and Galician and is proficient in Bulgarian. This fall, he will launch his own international ecological restoration organization.
