Phares and Festivals: Notes from France

Language France program leaders recap a jam-packed day exploring the local history and culture of the Le Conquet commune.

Our first full day in Le Conquet was spectacular!

We hopped on our bikes to start the day off at La Musée de la Memoire, a WWII history museum set in a bunker (with an interactive portion that involved hiding in a (simulated) basement with a French family as bombs rocked Brest).

After that somewhat somber experience, we visited the St. Mathieu lighthouse and went all the way to the top for a history lesson and an amazing view.

We grabbed a lovely lunch nearby and tried a local dessert (le far). With this extra boost of sugar-generated energy, we spent the rest of the afternoon at the “Festival of the West” (in French, the play on words is almost identical: the Westival, or Ouestival!). We heard songs sung in the regional language (Breton), tasted crêpes au caramel du beurre salé (a local favorite), and danced alongside traditional dancers and musicians.

Our group also got an extra treat! Among the many local artisans, one Breton man specialized in making his own games out of wood and metal (never plastic!) and was excited to show us how to play.

Our language pledge is going strong, at any given moment about 90% of the group is speaking exclusively in French. There are going to be some truly amazing accents by the time we get back!

Tomorrow we are starting our mini-stage, and heading out for a surf lesson in the afternoon. À plus!
